Hi,

My name is Paul Smith and I am running for the 5th Congressional District. 

I believe that in this day and age candidates should be elected for office based on skills, leadership, integrity, and abilities.  Currently we elect people to Congress--Republicans and Democrats--because of their party affiliation and because they are in so-called "safe districts."  A "safe district" is one where the voting population heavily favors one party and the minority party candidate has no chance.  The age of the 'good old boy network' and the 'status quo' must come to an end.  It's time to elect officials who will put the needs of our people and our country ahead of partisan politics.  Gridlock, delays and petty issues seem to be the norm and I want to change that.  I intend to earn every vote I get by campaigning on the issues, not just relying on party affiliation.  This election I want to give the voters a chance to see each candidate for who they are and stop the carte blanche that had permeated our elections.  This election, let's elect someone who is truly "of the people and for the people."  May the best person, not the only person win!
